本品は、毛髪、羊毛、角、爪又は他の類似の動物組織から得られるタンパクである。
解説
角質タンパク質ともいう．は虫類，鳥類，ほ乳類の表皮角質，毛，爪，角，羽毛，卵殻などの構成タンパク質で，シスチンを多く含む(11～12％)．電子顕微鏡による観察では，直径約20 nm の繊維が六角格子状または層状に並び，この繊維はさらに9本の細繊維が円筒状になったものである．細繊維は直径約2 nm で，αヘリックスのペプチドが2本ないし3本より合わされたと仮定すると矛盾しない．X線回折法による研究から，細繊維は0.51 nm ピッチのαヘリックス構造をとり，水蒸気で引き伸ばした羊毛，毛髪ではβ構造をとると考えられている．[CAS 169799-44-4]

解説
硬タンパク質の一つで、毛髪、つめ、皮膚などの構造タンパク質（生体内で構造・形態などを形成・保持するタンパク質）の総称。角質ともいう。水およびすべての中性溶媒に不溶である。また、ペプシン、トリプシンなどのタンパク分解酵素の作用を受けにくい。ケラチンの分離は、原料を粉末にして熱有機溶媒および熱水による処理ののち、タンパク分解酵素で共存するタンパク質を除去してケラチンを残す。ケラチンはα(アルファ)-ケラチン群とβ(ベータ)-ケラチン群に分けられるが、α-ケラチンが主である。天然のものはα-ケラチンといわれる分子構造であるが，引伸ばすとβ-ケラチンとなる。一方，水蒸気加熱や薬品処理で，もとよりも短くなる超収縮 (過収縮) の現象もある。
α-ケラチン群はシスチン含有量の多いことが特徴で、ペプチド鎖はジスルフィド結合（-S-S-）に富み、網状につながった繊維構造をもつ。角(つの)やつめのシスチン含有量は約22％、皮膚、毛髪、羊毛では10～14％である。また、他のアミノ酸もほとんどのものを含む。β-ケラチン群は、爬虫(はちゅう)類、鳥類の鱗(うろこ)、つめ、嘴(くちばし)などを構成し、シスチンを含まず、側鎖のアミノ酸としてグリシン、アラニンが多い。

The protein encoded by this gene is a member of the cyclin-dependent protein kinase (CDK) family. CDK family members are highly similar to the gene products of Saccharomyces cerevisiae cdc28, and Schizosaccharomyces pombe cdc2, and are known to be important regulators of cell cycle progression. This kinase and its regulatory subunit cyclin C are components of the RNA polymerase II holoenzyme complex, which phosphorylates the carboxy-terminal domain (CTD) of the largest subunit of RNA polymerase II. This kinase has also been shown to regulate transcription by targeting the CDK7/cyclin H subunits of the general transcription initiation factor IIH (TFIIH), thus providing a link between the ′Mediator-like′ protein complexes and the basal transcription machinery. Fibrous proteins are generally insoluble in water and consist of long, coiled strands or flat sheets which have strength and elasticity. Keratin and collagen come in this category. Keratin is present in hair and wool. It is characterized by the high contents of several amino acids, especially cystine, arginine and serine. Keratins are generally harder than the fibrous collagen. Keratins are insoluble in organic solvents, but absorb and hold water.
