解説
エポキシ樹脂，1分子中にエポキシ基(オキシラン環)を2個以上含むプレポリマー，およびそれを硬化剤で硬化した樹脂の総称．大別すると，グリシジル型と非グリシジル型の二つに分かれる．おもにエピクロロヒドリンと多価フェノール類(ビスフェノールAなど)または多価アルコールとの反応，オレフィンのペルオキシ酸によるエポキシ化によって得られる生成物が用いられる．エポキシ化合物の製造は，たとえば，エピクロロヒドリンとビスフェノールを水酸化アルカリ存在下で反応させて行われる．硬化反応は有機ポリアミン，有機酸無水物，フェノール樹脂，ポリアミド樹脂などの硬化剤により，エポキシ基を開環させて行う．接着剤としてすぐれた特性を有し，注型品，積層材，ビニルポリマーの安定剤，コンクリートの改質剤などに用いられる．

用途
用途は、金属との親和性のよいことから、塗料、金属接着剤に、あるいはガラス繊維や炭素繊維にエポキシ樹脂プレポリマー溶液を含浸させたあと、硬化させた電子機器用銅張り積層板、炭素繊維を用いた航空器材、ゴルフクラブのシャフトや釣り竿(ざお)などから、道路舗装、塩化ビニル樹脂の安定剤など多方面にわたっている。

The condensation leaves epoxy end groups that are then reacted in a separate step with nucleophilic compounds (alcohols, acids, or amines). For use as an adhesive, the epoxy resin and the curing resin (usually an aliphatic polyamine) are packaged separately and mixed together immediately before use.

製造
エポキシ樹脂は金属表面との親和性が優れているので、とくに金属の接着剤や塗料として用いられる。硬化の際に揮発性物質の発生や体積収縮が少なく、機械的性質や電気絶縁性が優れ、溶剤に侵されない。硬化物の最高使用温度は、エポキシ樹脂の種類と、各種の硬化剤の組合せで決まり、高いものは300℃くらいまでのものがある。加工方法は注型、封入、含浸後硬化、塗装、接着など多様にわたっている。
