Physical properties

White crystalline powder; orthogonal crystal system; the tetrahydrate is a yellow-to-orange powder which, on heating at 180°C, loses all molecules of water; density of tetrahydrate 3.91 g/cm3; anhydrous salt decomposes at 350°C forming CeOSO₄; soluble in water (decomposes); soluble in dilute H₂SO₄ and other concentrated mineral acids.

Uses

Cerium(IV) sulfate is a redox indicator and is used in analytical chemistry for redox titrations. In ionized form, ceric ion acts as a strong oxidizer under acidic conditions. It is also used to prepare spherical-like nanoparticles CeO2, nanoparticles for NO reductions' reactions.

Uses

calibrated against sodium oxalate, traceable to NIST SRM

Preparation

Cerium(IV) sulfate is prepared by heating cerium(IV) oxide, CeO₂ with concentrated H₂SO₄. Also it may be obtained by the reaction of H₂SO₄ with cerium carbonate:
Ce(CO₃)₂ + 2H₂SO₄ + H₂O → Ce(SO₄)₂?4H₂O + 2CO₂.
