4-Bromo-9,9-spirodifluorene exhibits a spiroconjugation effect and has wide applications in optoelectronic materials, organic solar cells, organic nonlinear materials, and fluorescent probes.
Description
4-bromo-9, 9'-Spirobi[9H-fluorene is a kind of fluorene which is a polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon. It can be used as the intermediate of organic light-emitting diodes (OLEDs)
Synthesis
2-Bromo-1,1'-biphenyl (0.78 g, 3.34 mmol) was dissolved in dry THF (30 mL) under argon atmosphere, cooled to -78??C and stirred for 10 min at this temperature. A 2.5 M n-BuLi THF solution (1.47 mL, 3.67 mmol, 1.10 eq.) was then slowly injected via syringe at -78??C. The resulting yellow mixture was stirred at the same temperature for 1 hour. A solution of 4-bromo-9H-fluoren-9-one (1.00 g, 3.86 mmol, 1.15 eq.) in dry THF (35 mL) was then added dropwise and the mixture was stirred for another 30 min at -78??C and allowed to warm gradually to room temperature overnight. Saturated brine solution (10 ml) was added and the mixture was extracted twice with dichloromethane (2x30 ml). The combined organic extracts were dried over anhydrous magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. Without other purification, the crude was dissolved in a mixture of acetic/hydrochloric acid (50 mL/5 mL) and heated at 70??C for 2 hours with stirring. The mixture was then poured into water/ice (200 mL) and the solution was neutralized with solid sodium hydroxide until the pH reached 7. The organic layer was then extracted three times with dichloromethane (3x50 mL). The combined organic extracts were dried over magnesium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure. The residue was purified by rapid chromatography on silica gel (light petroleum). Colorless solid 4-bromo-9,9-spirobifluorene (2.84 g, 7.19 mmol).
Advantages
4-bromo-9,9'-Spirobi[9H-fluorene has a spiro conjugation effect, which is characterized by making the molecules coplanar and the electron cloud averaged, and controlling the effective conjugation length while ensuring the length of the spiro molecular chain; rigid planar structure, high fluorescence quantum yield; compared with other positions, the position of the 4-bromo-9,9-spirobifluorene structure has higher reactivity and is extremely easy to be modified. Due to the above advantages, the synthesis of 4-bromo-9,9'-Spirobi[9H-fluorene has received more and more attention, and it has a wide range of applications in optoelectronic materials, organic solar cells, organic nonlinear materials, and fluorescent probes.
