Sodium tungstate dihydrate is currently being investigated as a potential therapy for obesity. Sodium tungstate dihydrate is also an inhibitor of acid phosphatases.

Sodium tungstate can be obtained by reacting tungsten trioxide with sodium hydroxide solution, followed by evaporative crystallization, centrifugal dehydration and drying.
