General Description

This gene encodes a member of the sorting nexin family. Members of this family contain a phox (PX) domain, which is a phosphoinositide binding domain, and are involved in intracellular trafficking. This protein associated with the long isoform of the leptin receptor and with receptor tyrosine kinases for platelet-derived growth factor, insulin, and epidermal growth factor in cell cultures, but its function is unknown. Biochem/physiol Actions

Sorting Nexins 4 (SNX4) protein interacts with various tyrosine kinase receptors. SNX4 protein and amphiphysin 2 interact in the cell cytosol and on cytoplasmic vesicular structures. Overexpression of the SNX4 gene blocks the endocytosis of the transferrin receptor as efficiently as amphiphysin 2. The SNX4/amphiphysin 2 complex is essential for the control of the endosome fate after the formation of the endocytic vesicle.
