本品は、アロエベラ Aloe barbadensis の葉である。[Aloe vera]
解説
ユリ科の多肉植物アロエ属の総称だが，一般にはキダチアロエA.arborescens Mill.(一名，医者いらず)をいう（イラスト）。アロエはアラビア語の苦みを意味するallochから由来。それを蘆薈と写字したものがロカイと読まれ，ロカイとも呼ばれるようになった。アロエ属Aloeは約300種知られ，アフリカの南部から東部の乾燥地が分布の中心で，マダガスカル島にも40種ほど分布し，カメルーン，ソコトラ島，アラビアにも少数の種が自生する。
