解説
ショウガ科の多年草（イラスト）。香辛料として世界的に知られている。起源は古く，インド原産とされているが，野生種は発見されていない。熱帯域が原産地であるので，高温多湿を好み，日本では7月から9月ごろにかけてよく生育する。草丈は60～90cmになり，地下茎は順次短縮した分枝を派生し，それぞれから直立した茎葉を茂らせる。生育するにつれて個々の茎葉の基部の地下茎が肥大し，節くれだった形状となる。地下茎は多肉で黄色を呈し，繊維質で芳香と辛みがある。
