Pyrophosphate (PP
i) is produced by a number of biochemical reactions such as ATP hydrolysis, DNA and RNA polymerizations, cyclic AMP formation, and the formation of fatty acid-coenzyme A esters. It is hydrolyzed by inorganic pyrophosphatase. PPi is present in the blood and in the extracellular matrix of tissues.
