The HSD17B8 antibody targets the 17β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 8 (HSD17B8) enzyme, a member of the 17β-HSD family involved in steroid metabolism. HSD17B8. encoded by the HSD17B8 gene, is a 26 kDa protein localized predominantly in mitochondria. It catalyzes the oxidation of estradiol to estrone and androstanediol to dihydrotestosterone, playing a regulatory role in sex hormone homeostasis. Unlike other 17β-HSD isoforms, HSD17B8 exhibits dual substrate specificity and functions as a short-chain dehydrogenase/reductase (SDR) with NAD⁺/NADH cofactor dependence. Its expression is detected in various tissues, including the liver, brain, and reproductive organs, suggesting roles beyond steroidogenesis, such as neuroprotection and lipid metabolism.

HSD17B8 antibodies are critical tools for studying the enzyme's expression, localization, and functional interactions in physiological and pathological contexts. They enable applications like Western blotting, immunohistochemistry, and ELISA to investigate HSD17B8's involvement in hormone-related cancers, metabolic disorders, or neurodegenerative diseases.
