激活素（Activin）与抑制素（inhibin）是两种密切相关的蛋白质复合物，但具有几乎完全相反的生物学效应。激活素可促进卵泡刺激素（FSH）的生物合成与分泌，并参与月经周期的调节。研究发现激活素还具有多种其他功能，包括在细胞增殖、分化、凋亡、代谢、稳态维持、免疫应答、伤口修复及内分泌功能中发挥作用。相反，抑制素则会下调FSH合成并抑制其分泌。
激活素是由不同β亚基（哺乳动物中包括βA、βB、βC和βE）形成的非糖基化同源二聚体或异源二聚体，而抑制素则是由独特的α亚基与某个β亚基组成的异源二聚体。激活素A是由两个βA链组成的广泛表达的同源二聚体：βA亚基还可与βB或βC亚基分别异源二聚化，形成激活素AB和激活素AC。14 kDa的成熟人源βA链与牛、猫、小鼠、猪及大鼠的βA链具有100%的氨基酸序列一致性。
