The protein has a calculated MW of 15.0 kDa. The protein migrates as 18-23 kDa when calibrated against Star Ribbon Pre-stained Protein Marker under reducing (R) condition (SDS-PAGE) due to glycosylation.

白细胞介素5(IL-5)是一种由2型辅助T细胞和肥大细胞产生的白细胞介素。作为造血家族成员的TH2细胞因子,IL-5在人类中由115个氨基酸构成(小鼠为133个氨基酸)。与此细胞因子家族其他成员(即IL-3和GM-CSF)不同,该糖蛋白的活性形式为同源二聚体。
IL-5长期被认为与多种过敏性疾病的发病机制相关,包括过敏性鼻炎和哮喘。在这些疾病中可观察到循环系统、气道组织及诱导痰中嗜酸性粒细胞数量显著增加。鉴于嗜酸性粒细胞与过敏性疾病(特别是过敏性哮喘)病理的高度相关性,学界广泛推测嗜酸性粒细胞在该疾病病理过程中起重要作用。靶向IL-5的药物包括美泊利单抗(mepolizumab)和瑞利珠单抗(reslizumab)。
