Hepcidin-25, also known as LEAP-1 (Liver-expressed Antimicrobial Peptide 1), was independently discovered in human blood ultrafiltrate and urine. This peptide is primarily expressed in the liver and belongs to a novel family of small antimicrobial peptides in vertebrates, containing eight cysteine residues and exhibiting significant antibacterial and antifungal activity. Further research has demonstrated that hepcidin is the primary iron-regulating hormone in humans. By binding to ferroportin, hepcidin induces its internalization and degradation, thereby blocking cellular iron efflux.
