Omalizumab is a humanized monoclonal antibody that targets immunoglobulin E (IgE), a key antibody mediator of allergic responses. It binds to the Fc region of free IgE, preventing IgE from attaching to its high‑affinity receptor (FcεRI) on mast cells and basophils. This reduces the surface expression of FcεRI and inhibits allergen‑induced activation of these cells, thereby decreasing the release of histamine and other inflammatory mediators. It is approved for the treatment of moderate‑to‑severe persistent allergic asthma, chronic spontaneous urticaria (CSU), and nasal polyps in patients who are inadequately controlled with standard therapies. It is administered via subcutaneous injection.
