Bezlotoxumab is a fully human monoclonal antibody (IgG1) approved for the prevention of recurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (rCDI) in adults who are receiving antibacterial treatment for CDI and are at high risk for recurrence. It functions by specifically neutralizing C. difficile toxin B (TcdB), one of the two primary virulence factors responsible for the disease. Unlike antibiotics that target the bacteria, bezlotoxumab targets the damaging toxin itself. It is administered as a single intravenous infusion alongside standard-of-care antibiotics and has been shown to significantly reduce the rate of rCDI by providing passive immunity against the toxin during and after antibiotic treatment.
