Exbivirumab is an investigational human monoclonal antibody developed for the prevention of Hepatitis B virus (HBV) reinfection following liver transplantation. It functions as a targeted neutralizing antibody against HBV. Specifically designed for transplant recipients who are chronically infected with HBV, exbivirumab is intended to be administered peri-operatively and post-transplant. Its mechanism involves binding with high affinity to the Hepatitis B surface antigen (HBsAg) on circulating HBV virions and subviral particles, thereby neutralizing the virus and preventing it from infecting the newly transplanted liver graft. This provides passive immunoprophylaxis while the patient's own immune system recovers and/or in conjunction with other antiviral therapies.
