该基因编码半胱氨酸肽酶家族C13的一名成员，在内体/溶酶体降解系统中发挥重要作用。所编码的无活性前体蛋白通过自催化方式切除C端抑制性前肽，生成具有活性的内肽酶，该酶在天冬酰胺残基的C端侧切割蛋白质底物。缺乏该编码蛋白的小鼠在溶酶体蛋白质加工过程中存在缺陷，导致蛋白质在溶酶体中积聚，并出现类似噬血细胞性淋巴组织细胞增生症的症状。
