Heptane, also known as n-Heptane, is a straight-chain alkane consisting of seven carbon atoms, with the appearance of a colourless transparent liquid, with an odour similar to that of petroleum; Density 0,68g/cm3; Melting point -91°C; Boiling point 98°C; Flash point -7°C; Vapour pressure 47,4kPa (20 °C); Refractive index: 1,3878; Octane number: 0; Insoluble in water, soluble in many organic solvents such as ethanol, ether, ester, white oil, benzene or chlorinated hydrocarbons.

Uses of Heptane

Heptane is used as an anaesthetic, diluent, solubility enhancer, fuel additive, organic synthesis and solvent in gasoline. In the pharmaceutical industry it is used as an inert solvent for purification, recrystallisation and washing of active pharmaceutical ingredients (APIs). Some synthetic rubbers, such as polybutadiene, are produced in solution. Because n-heptane is chemically inert (it has no so-called functional groups or functional groups), it is an ideal solvent for such sensitive reactions. n-Heptane is also used for the extraction and purification of the natural substance CBD (cannabidiol). In addition. It is also used as a component of paints, varnishes and adhesives.

Health hazards of Heptane

Heptane is a flammable organoalkane, the vapour may explode if ignited in an enclosed area and if the vapour is inhaled it can cause coughing or breathing difficulties and may lead to aspiration pneumonia. The solution is irritating to the skin and eyes. If swallowed, it can cause nausea or vomiting. The substance may cause effects on the central nervous system.
