Steps:

2 Experiment Set 1
In a glovebox, under N2 atmosphere, the catalyst (and base when required) was placed inside 5 mL vials under N2 atmosphere. The solvent when used was added followed by the substrate (compound (II)). The vial was placed inside an autoclave and purged with D2. The pressure of D2 was increased to 50 bar and the temperature was increased to 70° C. while stirring at 500 rpm with a magnetic stirred. After 16 h, the reaction mixture was cooled. After purging with N2, the autoclave was opened and the reaction mixture was analyzed by 1H NMR to determine the conversion and D incorporation. The reaction conditions were as follows: 50 bar D2, Substrate=15-20 wt %, ratio of Substrate/Catalyst=1000, Base=5 mol % relative to substrate when present, 70° C., 16 h. The experiments were performed using methyl acetate with various catalysts. Results are shown in Table 1.
The experiments were performed in the same way as in Experiment Set 1 using various substrates with Ru-MACHO-BH, except experiment 11 which uses Ru-MACHO. Results are shown in Table 2.
