Synthesis of Ethyl picolinate
Picolinic acid (5.0 g, 41 mmol) was refluxed with concentrated H2SO4 (12 mL) in 40 mL of anhydrous ethanol overnight according to a literature preparation1 (1). The reaction mixture was concentrated, and the residue was then, poured into 25 mL of H2O. The resulting mass was then, basified with Na2CO3, extracted thrice with 25 mL of CH2Cl2. The organic layer was dried over MgSO4 and was concentrated to yield a colorless liquid (85%). 1H NMR (ppm, CDCl3): 8.79 (m, 1H), 8.12 (m, 1H). 7.84 (m, 1H), 7.44 (m, 1H), 4.44 (q, 2H), 1.41 (t, 3H); 13C NMR (ppm, CDCl3): 14, 61, 124, 126, 136, 147, 149, 164; MS (EI, 70 eV, %): M+ 151(9), 107(35), 78(100); HRMS: Calc. 151.7635, Found: 151.7635.
