MSDS Information
jaconine Usage And Synthesis
DescriptionThis alkaloid from Senecio Jacobea was originally given the empirical formula ClsH2S0sN by Barger and Blackie but has since been shown to exist as the chlorine-containing compound. It has[α] D + 52.5° (CHCl3 ) and on hydrolysis yields retronecine and jaconecic acid, ClOH160 6, m.p. l83-4°C; [α]25D + 28.1 ° (EtOH). In this reaction, the chlorine is also lost by hydrolysis. The base forms a dihydrochloride, m.p. 204-5°C (dec.).
