Soluble in water and most organic solvents, resins, waxes and so on, insoluble in anhydrous glycerin, acacia, casein and soy protein.

Uses gamma-valerolactone has a strong reaction ability, can be used as resin solvent and various related compounds intermediates. Also used as lubricants, plasticizers, gelling agents for nonionic surfactants, lide additives for leaded gasoline, for the dyeing of cellulose esters and synthetic fibers. Gamma-valerolactone has vanillin and coconut aromas.
