para-Cresidine is an intermediate that is used to create dyes and pigments. It is a light yellow to light brown solid with the chemical formula C8H11ON or CH3OC6H3(CH3)NH2. It appears as white crystals. Its carcinogen category is 2, and upon heating it produces toxic fumes including nitrogen oxides. It reacts with strong oxidants and some forms of plastic, rubber, and coatings. para-Cresidine is possibly carcinogenic to humans. It boils at 235 °C, melts at 51.5 °C, and is not very soluble in water.

Production method

1. Obtained by nitration, methoxylation and reduction of p-chlorotoluene. The mixed acid was added to p-chlorotoluene at 15-20℃, and stirred at 30℃ for 2h, diluted with water, separated the waste acid, and washed to obtain 4-chloro-3-nitrotoluene (yield 30.6%) and 4-chloro-2-nitrotoluene (yield 56.7%). The two were separated by fractional distillation and crystallization to obtain 4-chloro-3-nitrotoluene. It was reacted with methanol and sodium methanol solution, neutralized and separated with sulfuric acid to obtain 3-nitro-4-methoxytoluene with yield of 85.6%. After reduction with water, iron powder and formic acid, it is extracted and distilled with solvent gasoline for many times.

2. 2-nitro-4-cresol is obtained by nitration of p-cresol, and then methylated with dimethyl sulfate to 3-nitro-4-p-methoxytoluene, and finally reduced with alkali sulfide.

3. Preparation of p-chloro-N, N-diethylbenzylamine by nitration, methoxylation and reduction reaction.

It is suitable for the synthesis of direct, disperse and reactive dyes.
