Preparation and application of high-purity 1,2-octanediol

1,2-Octyl glycol is a colorless and transparent liquid with pungent smell, which can be mixed with a variety of organic chemicals in any proportion, and has good compatibility in formula. 1,2-Octanediol is used to clean soiled fabrics. Thus, cleaning compositions comprising 1,2-octanediol, preferably in combination with solvents, are impregnated into carrier sheets. The sheets are tumbled with soiled fabrics inside of a plastic bag. The resulting home dry cleaning process leaves the fabrics clean and refreshed[1]. A home dry cleaning process is provided. Thus, a carrier sheet releasably impregnated with solvents such as butoxy propoxy propanol, 1,2-octanediol as a wetting agent, water and an emulsifier is placed in a plastic bag with soiled garments and tumbled in a hot-air clothes dryer. The garments are cleaned and refreshed[2].

Preparation method of high-purity 1,2-octanediol 

The present invention relates to a method for producing high-purity 1,2-octanediol, and more particularly, as a reaction catalyst while reacting hydrogen peroxide and formic acid with 1-olefin (1-olefin) Provided is a method for preparing high-purity 1,2-octanediol in high yield by adding oxalic acid to prevent side reactions and removing oxidation by-products and esterification by-products generated by liquid extraction.

In addition, it is possible to obtain colorless and odorless 1,2-octanediol applicable to cosmetics and household products by maximally suppressing generation and yellowing of odorous substances in the manufacturing process, and by remarkably reducing the amount of reactants compared to the prior art, excessive reactants It has an economical effect and eco-friendly effect of effectively reducing the cost and processing cost, and the separation and purification cost of the product[3]. 

Application of 1,2-octanediol 

As a basic raw material industry, alumina industry plays an important role in the development of the national economy. All countries in the world attach great importance to the development of alumina industry. At present, almost all the alumina needed in the world is produced by alkali method. According to the different ore resources, there are three methods used in industrial production, namely Bayer process, sintering process and combined process. Bayer process is suitable for treating high-grade ores, sintering process is suitable for treating low-grade ores, and combined process is generally used for treating medium and low-grade ores. Practice has proved that the crystallization process of aluminum hydroxide can be improved by adding 1,2-octyl glycol properly in the Bayer decomposition process, and aluminum hydroxide with larger particle size and higher decomposition rate can be obtained. It is an economical and feasible method to strengthen the decomposition process. The strengthening effect of additives on the seed decomposition process of sodium aluminate solution is to increase the particle size of aluminum hydroxide and reduce the fine particles in aluminum hydroxide products by promoting the agglomeration and growth of aluminum hydroxide crystals or eliminating the toxic effect of organic substances on aluminum hydroxide crystal growth[4].

An eyelid scrub composition comprising polyhexamethylene biguanide (PHMB), 1,2-hexanediol, 1,2-octanediol, and a pH stabilizing surfactant solution present in an amount effective to control the pH level of the composition between 5.5 and 7.5. The composition can further comprise moisturizers and foam stabilizers. The composition can be combined with a fabric pad for use as an eyelid scrub, where the fabric pad is pre-moistened with the composition and packaged for use. The composition may be applied to the eyelid scrub and rubbed to induce foaming. The composition is produced by preparing a modified Ringer's solution and adding 1,2-hexanediol, 1,2-octanediol, and an effective amount of one or more pH stabilizing surfactants. The mixture is then heated and allowed to cool before polyhexamethylene biguanide is added[5].
