Steps:

Typical experimental procedure for a reaction intramolecular cycloisomerization

General procedure: To a stirred solution of 2,2-dimethyl-3-phenylcyclobutanone (1a) (50 mg, 0.29 mmol) in dry dichloromethane (2 mL) was added TfOH (0.13 mL, 1.45 mmol) at room temperature. The resulting solution was stirred for 1 h and the reaction was quenched by adding aqueous solution of NaHCO3. The resulting mixture was extracted with dichloromethane (3×10 mL) and the combined organic layers were washed with brine, dried over anhydrous Na2SO4, filtered, and concentrated. The crude product was purified by column chromatography on silica gel (hexane/ethyl acetate = 20:1) to afford 4a (37.5 mg, 0.215mmol, 75%).
