with Dimethylphenylsilane in 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane at 100; for 3 h;

Steps:

2.3 Reductive carbonyl coupling of 1-octanal

1-octanal (1.00 mL, 6.4 mmol), dimethylphenylsilane (1.18 mL, 7.7 mmol, 1.2 eq.), mesitylene (0.30 mL, 2.1 mmol), anhydrous 1,1,2,2-tetrachloroethane (5.0 mL) and CNH/MoO2 (0.040 g, 0.1 mol% Mo) were added to a round bottom flask with Morton indentations in air. The reaction mixture was stirred at 500 rpm and heated to 100 °C for 3 h with a condenser attached. NMR samples were collected and analyzed before and after the reaction. Di-octyl ether was obtained in 98% yield (determined using an internal standard).
