Reaction Conditions:

Stage #1: ethyl 2-(benzo[d][1,3]dioxol-5-yl)-2-oxoacetatewith methanol;sodium hydroxide at 0; for 2 h;
Stage #2: in water; pH=~ 3 - 4;

To a solution of step-b product (50 g, 0.22 mol) in methanol (350 ml, 7 times), 3M NaOH solution (13.5 g, 1.5 eq) was added at 0⁰C. Overall reaction mixture was allowed to stir for 2 hrs. Progress of the reaction was monitored by TLC (50% ethyl acetate/hexane, R_f-0.3). On completion of the reaction, excess methanol was distilled off. Residue obtained was taken in water (200 ml), acidified to a pH~3-4 and extracted with ethyl acetate (2 * 100 ml). Combined extract was dried over sodium sulfate, concentrated under reduced pressure and the crude obtained was purified by column chromatography (silica gel, 30% ethyl acetate/hexane) to yield the required product as an yellow colored solid (30 g, 70% yield).
