[Production Methods]

Mecoprop-P-isobutyl is produced through an esterification-centred industrial process designed to preserve the optical purity of the (R)-mecoprop-P acid while attaching the isobutyl alcohol moiety. Production begins with preparation and purification of enantiomerically enriched mecoprop-P acid, obtained either by asymmetric synthesis or by resolving racemic mecoprop. The chiral acid is then converted into an activated carboxyl derivative, most commonly an acid chloride, under conditions that minimise racemisation. This activated intermediate is reacted with isobutanol to form the isobutyl ester, with temperature, solvent, and catalyst choices tuned to drive the esterification efficiently while avoiding over-reaction or hydrolysis.
[Mechanism of action]

Selective, systemic, absorbed through leaves and translocated to roots. Synthetic auxin.
[Pesticide Type]

Herbicide
