ChEBI: Bentranil is a benzoxazine that is 4H-3,1-benzoxazin-4-one substituted by a phenyl group at position 2. It is a postemergence herbicide used for the control of annual weeds in cereal crops, maize, and rice. It has a role as a herbicide. | [Production Methods]
Bentranil was manufactured as a specialty benzothiazole fungicide, and its commercial production followed the fine chemical synthesis routes typical of mid 20th century protective fungicides. Industrial manufacture began with preparation of the benzothiazole core, followed by controlled acylation and nitrile forming steps to introduce the characteristic substituents that give bentranil its fungicidal activity. These reactions were carried out in batch reactors under anhydrous, temperature regulated conditions, after which the crude product was purified, usually by solvent crystallisation, to yield technical grade bentranil. | [Mechanism of action]
