Iofensulfuron is produced commercially through a sulfonylurea-type synthetic route that builds its pyrimidinylsulfonylurea herbicide framework. Industrial synthesis begins with preparation of a trifluoromethyl-substituted pyrimidine intermediate, which is functionalised via chlorination and subsequent substitution to introduce the sulfonyl group. In parallel, a phenylurea fragment is generated from aniline derivatives through carbamoylation. These two fragments are then coupled under controlled conditions to form the sulfonylurea linkage, yielding the final iofensulfuron structure. The sodium salt form is obtained by neutralisation with sodium hydroxide. | [Mechanism of action]
