To a solution of 2,6-dichloro-9H-purine (1 g, 5.29 mmol) in methanol (15 mL) was added a methanolic solution of 25% sodium methanolate (1.26 mL, 5.89 mmol). The reaction mixture was heated to 80 °C and kept for 1 h, followed by cooling to room temperature. The resulting precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with ice-cold methanol and dried to afford 2-chloro-6-methoxypurine 920 mg (94% yield) as a white solid. Mass spectrometry analysis showed m/z 185.36 [M + 1].
