To a solution of 4-nitrobenzyl bromide (10.8 g, 0.05 mol) in acetonitrile (50 mL) was added an excess of dimethylamine (50 mL) and stirred at room temperature for 3 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, water (100 mL) was added to dilute the reaction mixture, which was subsequently extracted twice with dichloromethane (CH2Cl2, 2 x 50 mL). The organic phases were combined, dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate, filtered and concentrated under reduced pressure to afford the target product N,N-dimethyl-4-nitrobenzylamine. | [References]
