Proflavine Hemisulfate, the hemisulfate form of proflavin, is an acridine-derived fluorescent contrast agent and disinfectant used for cell imaging and antiseptic purposes. Following topical application, proflavin diffuses into cells and intercalates into DNA, leading to its accumulation in and staining of the nucleus. This allows visualization of the nucleus during fluorescence imaging. Such capability enables nuclear morphometry and facilitates the identification of cancer cells. Additionally, proflavin sulfate exerts antimicrobial effects through binding to bacterial DNA, which disrupts DNA synthesis and inhibits bacterial cell growth. | [in vivo]
