General procedure for the synthesis of 2-(3-methyl-2-nitrophenyl)acetic acid from 2-(3-methyl-2-nitrophenyl)acetonitrile: 0.1 g (0.5 mmol) of 2-(3-methyl-2-nitrophenyl)acetonitrile and 0.4 mL of water were added to a 2-hour vial. Under stirring, 0.5 mL of concentrated hydrochloric acid was slowly added dropwise to this reaction slurry, followed by 50 drops of acetic acid. The reaction mixture was heated to 90°C and maintained at this temperature for 5 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the solution was cooled and the formation of a white precipitate was observed. The white precipitate was collected by filtration, washed with water and dried to give 0.076 g (70% yield) of light yellow crystals. Mass spectrometry analysis (APCI) showed 195 [M-H]-. | [References]
