General procedure for the synthesis of 1-methyl-2-chloromethylimidazole from 1-methyl-2-hydroxymethyl-1H-imidazole: 1.8 mL of thionyl chloride was slowly added dropwise to 1.12 g of 1-methyl-2-hydroxymethyl-1H-imidazole at 0 °C. The reaction mixture was stirred at 20 °C for 18 h. Then, the temperature was raised to 70 °C to continue the reaction for 2 h. The reaction was carried out at 20 °C. Upon completion of the reaction, the solvent was removed by concentration under reduced pressure and the target product 1-methyl-2-chloromethylimidazole was quantitatively obtained. 1H NMR data of the product (DMSO-d6, δ/ppm): 3.90 (s, 3H); 5.22 (s, 2H); 5.36 (t, 1H); 7.77 (d, 1H); 7.80 (d, 1H). | [References]
