GENERAL METHOD: 2-Bromotoluene (1.0 mmol), pyrazole (1.5 mmol), LiOH (2.0 mmol), TBAB (0.2 mmol), activated Cu (0.1 mmol), and 2 mL H2O were added to a 10 mL flask. The mixture was heated in an oil bath at 120°C. After the reaction was completed, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and the product was extracted with ethyl acetate (10 mL × 3). The organic phases were combined, washed with brine (15 mL), dried over MgSO4, and concentrated under reduced pressure. Purification by silica gel column chromatography (petroleum ether/ethyl acetate, 5:1) afforded 1-o-tolyl-1H-pyrazole (colorless liquid, 88% yield). | [References]
