MCPA-diolamine is produced by first manufacturing and purifying technical-grade MCPA acid through the standard industrial sequence of para-cresol chlorination followed by carboxylation to form the phenoxyacetic acid. The neutralisation step uses diethanolamine rather than the simpler monoethanolamine, yielding a highly water soluble diolamine salt when the acid is reacted with the amine in aqueous solution under controlled pH and temperature.
