General procedure for the synthesis of 2-(5-chloro-2-nitrophenyl)acetic acid from 2-(5-chloro-2-nitrophenyl)acetonitrile: One equivalent of 2-(5-chloro-2-nitrophenyl)acetonitrile was dissolved in a mixture of acetic acid (AcOH) and concentrated hydrochloric acid (HCl) (1:5, v/v) and heated and refluxed for 4 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the product in the reaction mixture was extracted with ethyl acetate and the organic phase was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate (Na2SO4), followed by evaporation under reduced pressure to remove the solvent, to afford the target product 2-(5-chloro-2-nitrophenyl)acetic acid. | [References]
