The commercial production of MCPA-thioethyl follows a concise two-step. First, MCPA acid (4-chloro-2-methylphenoxyacetic acid, produced via Williamson etherification of 4-chloro-o-cresol with chloroacetic acid) is converted to its acid chloride using thionyl chloride in toluene to yield the intermediate. This acid chloride is then reacted with ethanethiol or its sodium salt in dichloromethane in the presence of triethylamine, forming the thioester via rapid nucleophilic substitution; the mixture is washed with dilute sodium bicarbonate and water, then vacuum-distilled to obtain technical-grade MCPA-thioethyl. | [General Description]
