Myristoyl-L-carnitine is a naturally occurring long-chain acylcarnitine involved in the beta-oxidation of long-chain fatty acids. Myristoyl-L-carnitine may be used as an analytical standard for high-performance liquid chromatography or LC MS/MS studies.
Myristoyl-L-carnitine may be useful as a marker in the diagnosis of genetic metabolic disorders and is a potential marker for very-long-chain coenzyme A dehydrogenase deficiency (VLCADD). Plasma levels of myristoyl-L-carnitine are decreased in patients with chronic fatigue syndrome and increased in patients with end-stage renal disease.
The product is used primarily as a control for MS/MS. | [Uses]
Myristoyl-L-carnitine may be used as an analytical standard to determine the content of the analyte in maize plants using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to triple quadrupole-LC MS/MS. The exogenous application of carnitine stimulates the transportation of fatty acids into mitochondria, and the possible effect of carnitine on the lipid trafficking between cytoplasm, mitochondrial matrix and the mitochondrial respiration in the leaves of maize grown under normal and cold conditions is investigated. It may be used as an analytical reference standard in the following:
- Separation and identification of underivatized myristoyl-L-carnitine in human plasma samples using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled to tandem mass spectrometry (HPLC-MS/MS).
- Determination of the analyte in dried blood samples using high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) coupled with electrospray ionization-tandem mass spectrometry (ESI-MS/MS).
| [Definition]
ChEBI: O-tetradecanoyl-L-carnitine is an O-acyl-L-carnitine in which the acyl group is specified as myristoyl (tetradecanoyl). It has a role as a human metabolite. It is an O-tetradecanoylcarnitine and a saturated fatty acyl-L-carnitine. | [General Description]
Myristoyl-L-carnitine belongs to the acyl-L-carnitine class of compounds, which are acetylated forms of L-carnitine, derived from the breakdown of amino and fatty acids. The compounds are reported to be used as biomarkers in the diagnosis of carnitine deficiency. | [Biochem/physiol Actions]
