[Definition]

ChEBI: An organoammonium salt resulting from the formal reaction of equimolar amounts of benazolin and dimethylamine. It is used as a post-emergence herbicide for the control of annual weeds in crops.
[Production Methods]

Benazolin-dimethylammonium is produced by first manufacturing technical benazolin, formed through acylation and cyclisation steps that generate the herbicide’s benzoxazinone acid core. Once the parent acid is available, producers convert it into the dimethylammonium salt to improve water solubility and compatibility with liquid formulations. This is done by dissolving or suspending benazolin in water or a mixed solvent and treating it with dimethylamine under controlled pH and temperature, forming the dimethylammonium carboxylate.
[Mechanism of action]

Selective, systemic growth-regulation action. Synthetic auxin.
[Pesticide Type]

Herbicide
