Benzothiazol-5-ylmethanol (2.8 g, 17 mmol) was dissolved in anhydrous dichloromethane (20 mL) at room temperature, followed by addition of manganese dioxide (14 g, 0.16 mol). The reaction mixture was stirred continuously at room temperature for 16 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the insoluble material was removed by filtration and the filtrate was concentrated under vacuum to afford 5-formylbenzothiazole (2.5 g, 93% yield) as a yellow solid. | [References]
