General procedure for the synthesis of 2-bromo-4-methyl-1-nitrobenzene from 2-bromo-4-methylaniline: 77% 3-chloroperoxybenzoic acid (150 mmol, 33.62 g) was added to a solution of 2-bromo-4-methylaniline (30 mmol, 5.56 g) in toluene (100 mL), and the reaction mixture was heated and refluxed for 6 hours. After completion of the reaction, the mixture was cooled to room temperature and filtered. The filtrate was washed sequentially with 10% sodium hydroxide solution (2 x 100 mL) and saturated saline (100 mL), and the organic phase was dried with anhydrous sodium sulfate. The solvent was removed by evaporation under reduced pressure and the resulting residue was purified by fast column chromatography. | [References]
