The general procedure for the synthesis of 5,6-dimethoxy-3,3-dimethyl-2,3-dihydro-1H-inden-1-one from the compound (CAS: 51458-29-8) is as follows: to a solution of 2.6 g (about 13 mmol) of the compound in benzene (96 mL) was added 13.7 g (64 mmol) of pyridinium chlorochromate and 31.8 g of diatomaceous earth, and the mixture was stirred at 85 °C for 1 hour. Upon completion of the reaction, the insoluble material was removed by diatomaceous earth filtration and the residue on the diatomaceous earth was washed with ether and ethyl acetate. The filtrate and washings were combined and subsequently concentrated under reduced pressure. The resulting crude product was purified by silica gel column chromatography to give 2.1 g (yield: 77%) of the target product 5,6-dimethoxy-3,3-dimethylindan-1-one as a colorless oil. | [References]
