Methiopyrsulfuron is produced commercially through a sulfonylurea-type synthetic route typical of ALS-inhibiting herbicides. Industrial synthesis begins with preparation of a pyrimidine intermediate bearing a trifluoromethyl substituent, which is functionalised through chlorination and substitution to introduce the sulfonyl group. In parallel, a methoxy-substituted phenylurea fragment is generated from aniline derivatives via carbamoylation. These two fragments are then coupled under controlled conditions to form the sulfonylurea linkage, yielding the final methiopyrsulfuron structure. The sodium salt form is often produced to improve solubility and formulation properties. Purification is achieved by recrystallisation or chromatography to obtain technical-grade material. | [Mechanism of action]
Inhibition of acetolactate synthase (ALS). Highly selective. | [Pesticide Type]
