[General Description]

Crystals. Used as a fungicide; a seed, soil, and turf treatment, especially for cereals, sorghum, sugar beets, cotton, and flax. Not registered as a pesticide in the U.S.
[Reactivity Profile]

1-cyano-3-(methylmercurio)guanidine is incompatible with strong oxidizing agents such as chlorine .
[Health Hazard]

1-cyano-3-(methylmercurio)guanidine is extremely toxic to humans. The probable lethal dose for humans is 5-50 mg/kg of body weight (between 7 drops and one teaspoon for a 150 lb. person). Humans may be poisoned by feeding on the flesh of animals which have ingested this fungicide. Eating treated seeds may also cause poisoning. The poisoning may show delayed manifestations on the nervous system. Patients frequently become gradually worse after their illness is recognized and exposure is stopped. 1-cyano-3-(methylmercurio)guanidine is a strong skin irritant and produces blisters and other dermatitis.
[Fire Hazard]

(Non-Specific -- Mercury-Based Pesticide, n.o.s.) 1-cyano-3-(methylmercurio)guanidine may burn but does not ignite readily. Container may explode in heat of fire. Fire and runoff from fire control water may produce irritating or poisonous gases. When heated to decomposition, 1-cyano-3-(methylmercurio)guanidine emits very toxic fumes of mercury and nitrogen oxides.
[Potential Exposure]

This material is used as a fungicide; a seed, soil, and turf treatment especially for cereals, sorghum, sugar beets, cotton, and flax. Not registered for use as a pesticide in the United States
[First aid]

If this chemical gets into the eyes, remove any contact lenses at once and irrigate immediately for at least 15 minutes, occasionally lifting upper and lower lids. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical contacts the skin, remove contaminated clothing and wash immediately with soap and water. Seek medical attention immediately. If this chemical has been inhaled, remove from exposure, begin rescue breathing (using universal precautions, including resuscitation mask) if breathing has stopped and CPR if heart action has stopped. Transfer promptly to a medical facility. When this chemical has been swallowed, get medical attention. Give large quantities of water and induce vomiting. Do not make an unconscious person vomit. Keep victim quiet and maintain normal body temperature. Effects may be delayed; keep victim under observation

UN2777 Mercury based pesticides, solid, toxic, Hazard Class: 6.1; Labels: 6.1-Poisonous materials, Technical Name Required.
[Incompatibilities]

A strong reducing agent. Incompatible with oxidizers (chlorates, nitrates, peroxides, permanganates, perchlorates, chlorine, bromine, fluorine, etc.); contact may cause fires or explosions. Keep away from alkaline materials, strong bases, strong acids, oxoacids, epoxides
[Description]

Methylmercuric dicyanamide is a crystallinesolid. Molecular weight = 298.72; Freezing/Meltingpoint 5 156℃. Hazard Identification (based on NFPA-704M Rating System): Health 3, Flammability 1, Reactivity 0.Soluble in water.
[Chemical Properties]

Methylmercuric dicyanamide is a crystalline solid.
[Waste Disposal]

In accordance with 40CFR 165 recommendations for the disposal of pesticides and pesticide containers. Must be disposed properly by following package label directions or by contacting your local or federal environmental control agency, or by contacting your regional EPA office
[Production Methods]

Methylmercuric dicyanamide was produced through a simple salt formation process built on the prior preparation of methylmercuric chloride, the standard industrial precursor for organomercury agrochemicals of that era. Manufacturers first generated methylmercuric chloride by reacting metallic mercury with methylating agents under controlled conditions, then converted it to the dicyanamide salt by metathesis with sodium (or potassium) dicyanamide in aqueous or alcoholic solution. The poorly soluble methylmercuric dicyanamide crystallised out and was isolated by filtration and drying, yielding the technical material used in seed treatment formulations.
[Mechanism of action]

Toxic to most living organisms
