Clofop-isobutyl is an obsolete post-emergence herbicide. This pesticide has not been extensively studied and so little data is available regarding its environmental fate, ecotoxicity or impact on human health | [Production Methods]
Clofop isobutyl was produced using the same multipurpose plant chemistry applied to other “fop” herbicides of the late 1970s and early 1980s. Industrial manufacture began with synthesis of the chlorinated diphenyl ether phenol intermediate, which was then reacted with isobutyl chloroformate or a similar activated carbonyl reagent to generate the characteristic isobutyl ester. This esterification step required dry, inert conditions and careful control of hydrogen chloride evolution, so it was carried out in closed, solvent based batch reactors equipped with acid gas scrubbing. After reaction completion, the mixture underwent aqueous neutralisation, phase separation, and solvent exchange, followed by purification through crystallisation or vacuum stripping to yield technical grade clofop isobutyl. | [Mechanism of action]
Selective, absorbed through leaves and roots. Works by inhibiting acetyl-CoA carboxylase (ACCase), an enzyme essential for fatty acid synthesis in plant | [Pesticide Type]
