[Description]

Copper bis(3-phenylsalicylate) is an obsolete copper fungicide. The substance has not been extensively studied and so little information is available. However, it is highly toxic to mammals.
[Production Methods]

The commercial manufacture of copper bis(3 phenylsalicylate) followed the same low volume, multipurpose plant processes used for other copper–carboxylate complexes of the mid 20th century. Production began with synthesis or procurement of 3 phenylsalicylic acid, which was dissolved or slurried in a controlled alkaline medium to form its sodium or ammonium salt. This solution was then reacted with a soluble copper(II) salt, typically copper sulphate or copper chloride, in a stirred batch reactor, where the copper ion displaced the alkali metal to form the bis chelated copper complex. The reaction produced a fine, hydrophobic precipitate that was aged to ensure full complexation, then filtered, washed to remove inorganic by products, and dried under reduced pressure.
[Mechanism of action]

Absorbed copper disrupts the enzyme systems of pathogens. Multi-site activity.
[Pesticide Type]

Fungicide; Molluscicide
