General procedure for the synthesis of 8-nitroquinolin-6-ol from 6-methoxy-8-nitroquinoline: Step 1: 6-methoxy-8-nitroquinoline (2.15 g, 10.51 mmol) was dissolved in 48% hydrobromic acid (8.0 mL, 147.20 mmol) and the reaction was carried out at reflux for 16 hours. Upon completion of the reaction, the reaction mixture was cooled to room temperature to form a suspension of yellow crystals, which was subsequently filtered. The resulting solid was dissolved in water and the pH was adjusted by slowly adding 15% aqueous sodium hydroxide. subsequently, the suspension was filtered and the aqueous layer was adjusted to pH 6 with acid to precipitate crystals. The crystals were washed with water and filtered to give 8-nitroquinolin-6-ol in yellow crystalline form (1.89 g, 95% yield).LRMS (ESI): Calculated value 190.04, Measured value 191.1 (MH)+.
