Dark red powder. It is fairly soluble in water; the aqueous solution is turbid and brownish-orange. Adding concentrated hydrochloric acid turns it orange-brown; adding concentrated sodium hydroxide solution turns it dark purple. It is orange-red in ethanol and also soluble in ethylene glycol ether, but insoluble in other organic solvents.
